Noosa’s top offshore spots
Sunshine Reef (inshore reef complex; ~15–35 m)
Just a short run from the Noosa River mouth, Sunshine Reef is a great starter reef, offering a mix of local fish species. Aim to hit Sunshine Reef during the dawn change of light as fish come out to hunt. With local species biting year-round, you’ll find snapper during the winter months, with mackerel making an appearance as the water warms in summer.
Target fish species: Snapper (seasonal), sweetlip/grass emperor, coral trout, tuskfish, cobia and school mackerel/spotted/spanish in season.
Tactics: Float lines are best for hooking snapper, otherwise trolled hardbodies/skirts work well for mackerel.
Halls Reef (mid-range; ~15-20m)
Located 2 km from the Noosa Bar, Halls Reef makes for a great starting spot before hitting some of the deeper reefs. It’s often worth a visit just after heavy rain, as the freshwater flushes bait (like prawns, mullet and herring) from the river out onto the reef.
Target fish species: Snapper, sweetlip, coral trout, pearl perch, Spanish mackerel, cobia, longtail tuna and queenfish.
Tactics: Use bait jigs or live baits (e.g. slimy mackerel) to target reef fish. For pelagics, trolling with bonito or pilchard floaters, or casting deep diving lures can work well.
North Reef (mid-range; ~40-55m)
A little further off the coast in deeper waters lies North Reef, another popular Noosa deep sea fishing spot. The system is made up of weed beds, bommies (rocky outcrops) and gravel patches, offering both reef fishing and opportunities to snag a pelagic species.
Target fish species: Big snapper, pearl perch, coral trout, silver jew, Venus tuskfish, Moses perch, Maori cod, kingfish, mahi-mahi (dolphinfish), Spanish mackerel (especially “spotty” mackerel), tuna and occasionally marlin.
Tactics: Use paternoster rigs, jigs, or live baits to target reef dwellers like snapper, cod and perch. For pelagic species, trolling with hard bodies, rigged baits or casting stickbaits can be effective.
Chardons Reef (offshore; ~30–60 m)
A classic Noosa fishing ground, Chardons Reef offers varied bottom and current lines. It’s often considered one of the coast’s top fishing spots in the winter. That said, summer anglers can try their luck with game-type fish during the warmer months.
Target fish species: Snapper, tuskfish, cod, amberjack, red emperor, scarlet sea perch, mackerel, mahi mahi and the occasional marlin.
Tactics: Try deep jigs for amberjack and other bottom dwellers or troll for pelagics using floating baits or hardbodies.
Barwon Banks (wide grounds; ~50–100 m+)
Spanning roughly 23km, Barwon Banks is one of the larger reef systems compared to some of the other Noosa fishing spots. The deep waters make it an ideal spot for big fish, but that also calls for strong tackle and heavier fishing gear.
Target fish species: Pearl perch, snapper, red emperor, amberjack, kingfish, mahi mahi and wahoo on the edges.
Tactics: In shallower sections (~35–50 m), anchoring with berley is often used to bring out the fish, whereas drifting rigs can work well in deeper areas (e.g. ~85 m).
Pelagic highways (seasonal bluewater lines)
While the reefs off Noosa Heads offer exceptional fishing with a diverse range of fish species, you can’t forget about the pelagic highways that run off the working current lines. Because these “pelagic runs” are out in deeper, more open water, conditions are key. Wind, swell, tide and current will influence where and when you can fish effectively.
Target fish species: Spanish mackerel, longtail/tuna species, wahoo, mahi mahi and the odd billfish encounter.
Tactics: High-speed trolling with hard-body lures, skirted baits or floating baits attracts species like mackerel, tuna and marlin. Skippers often rely on sounders and fish finders to locate bait balls and pelagic targets.
